BSD

BSD is an Operating System solidly based on UNIX, which was first created in the late 1960s, to run on the mainframes of the period. It was progresivly developed through the years, performing solidly on the latest hardware as it was developed.

Over the years, the University of California developed software for the UNIX operating system. Much of this software replaced (and was better than) that included with UNIX, then owned by AT&T. AT&T proceded to include a lot of this software in its code, but did not properly attribute it. AT&T then sold UNIX to Novel, and Novel took the University to court over trademark issues. This led to a forest of suits and countersuits, from which the University came out the distinct winner. It lead to almost the entire UNIX codebase being released under an free, Open Source licence - To be used, for any purpose, by anyone.

From this beginning came BSD. Its mature code, open licence and great performance makes it a good choice for any comercial or domestic purpose. It's the OS that I use at home, and the platform used while writing this page. Servicing

Servicing computers is what I do. Most of the tools I use are available online. In order to help me (and you!) find them, I'll list them here.

• Startup program dictionary

• Avast Antivirus.The Antivirus software I currently Recomend. Free for home use.
• SpyBot Search and Destroy - Not the recent email worm - is one of the better Spyware removal tools.
• The Home of Adaware, the other major spyware removal tool. I often use the two together.
• HiJackThis is a very powerful tool for wresting control of your system from spyware and viruses.
• Squish.net's DNS checker can help check if internet problems are yours, or the site's DNS system.

Software

Software is what makes your computer system work. If your system doesn't do what you want, maybe you are using the wrong software! Here is some packages that I use on a daily basis. Notes on using these packages may be found elsewhere in this site.

• Openoffice is the most capable office software collection available for almost every computer system out there. This makes it a great choice for anyone desiring interoperability. The soon-to-be-released version 2 will be a must-have on all platforms.
• FreeBSD is my operating system of choice. Solid performance, ease of use, flexability and cost (nill!) makes it a great system.
• K Desktop Environment (KDE) provides a complete collection of tools for the computer user. Supports all UNIX-type operating systems, including linux and all BSD variants. Many think that Windows XP's "Look and Feel" owes a lot to this system.
• The Gimp is the image editor de rigeur of the Open Source world, and is a good choice for Windows users too. Equivalent (or slightly better than) the popular Paint Shop Pro software, it is also free to download.
• Firefox WWW Browser is the preferred WWW browser for all users. With Internet Explorer's dismal record, there is no reasont to continue with Microsoft. Get it now.
• ThunderBird Email Client is the Email companion to Firefox. Similar in style to Outlook Express, it includes powerful Spam filtering.
